PHOTOGRAPHY / EPHATA AND PALEO OCEANIC WISDOM SERIES

This work arose literally from the depths of the oceans, out of awe and reverence for a collection of tiny shell fragments of marine organisms collected amongst the sediments of the Brazilian continental slope. These sediments are found submerged at a depth ranging from 500m to 2,500m below sea level.

They are"hidden" images, brought to light through the lens of a microscope and the inquisitive, archaeological eye of the artist. The largest fragments measure only 5mm. After careful selection and composition, with the aid of tweezers, under the microscopic lens, the images are photographed and subsequently worked on.

In the photographic series entitled "Ephata" (an imperative expression from the Aramaic language, meaning “Open!”), the artist seeks to unveil the mystery which lies beneath this micro-universe. She rearranges and gives new meaning to the myriad of forms submerged in the depth of oceanic waters, weaving them with intimate images from the artist herself. The darkness, the depth of the waters and all that is mysterious and unconscious are elements which evoke the feminine nature that pulses within each one of us, men and women. ‘Ephata’ is a call from the deep Mother-ocean, a call for us to open to the sensitive dimension of our Being.
